I grew up in a Catholic family. Marriage
is supposed to be between a man and a woman. Abortion is murder.
All my relatives are conservative.
In middle school, especially, I just assumed that’s what I believed. I wasn’t
involved in politics, nor did I honestly really care. Freshman year, I realized
that politics allow for everyone’s voice to be heard. It was time for me to
become my own person and have my own beliefs.
This thought began with the
legalization of gay marriage. Am I gay? No, but does that mean that I don’t
believe others can do what they want? Marriage is a matter of love, and if you
love someone that is the same gender, then so be it. It is none of my concern. It
does not directly affect me or my happiness.
My views do differ from those who
raised me. And I’ve learned that it’s best to avoid the conversation at family
gatherings. My parents have learned to be supportive in allowing me to have my
own opinions, even if they challenge what is commonly believed in our house.
