Assignment 9- Katie Demos

Haven't people and groups always had disagreements? Fights to pick and debates? Whether it be in regards to people or even to animals, the action of fighting is an innate instinct any species possesses. So what separates fighting from war? War is a large scale, collective disagreement, sometimes blown out of proportion, yet still a conflict that two sides find the need to deal with, sometimes violently. If war is voluntary and civil, it's not a problem in my eyes. Where war gets out of hand is when it is fought using people involuntarily and where innocent lives are lost.
I believe that war dictated by governments should only be fought with consent of the governed. Such as regular disagreements, both sides have to be willing to argue about an issue. A government waltzing into a war that has the potential to affect an entire nation without the consent of the masses is For example, drafting people into the military for the sole purpose of having a substantial army is an issue. Drafting displays a lack of democratic rightness and control. If people aren't willing to fight for a cause, what is the nation doing other than exerting unjust control? You could say my reasoning doesn't apply in every situation, and you'd probably be right, however if every government acted for its majority, most problems could be simplified.
Although I do consider war to be a last resort, as it often results in more wrongs than rights, I do see a time and a place when it's done so properly and democratically.
