Assignment 14- Katie Demos

My family has never been big on doing special things for Thanksgiving. My mom has told me from a young age that I should strive to be thankful "365 days of the year, not just one." She also dislikes the glorification of Black Friday, and all the violence that seems to result from it. In general, anything my mom says goes, and so we usually spend Thanksgiving break either working, or staying in and taking time to ourselves.
For the most part I share my mom's belief. However I don't agree that Thanksgiving is really about giving thanks, contrary to what the title suggests. Thanksgiving is an excuse to come together, and that's mostly where I find the problem. Why take one day out of the year to do things that you enjoy with people and food you enjoy? Why not make that happen whenever you can, and why not be grateful and give back whenever you can? I'm sure some families do, and that Thanksgiving is just a nice holiday to celebrate for them, I just see it a little differently.
Although my family doesn't really "do Thanksgiving," for the past three years or so, my parents have cooked Greek food for the day. My dad loves to cook, so he takes the day off as an opportunity to put his culinary bravado out on display. This year, the food included lamb, moussaka, pastitsio, spanikopita, and whatever else my dad pulled out old recipes for.
