Assignment 9 - Dani Fauzi

Out of random chance I was born into a squarely middle class American family, and thus I live a life removed from violence and war. I also haven’t studied its effects and consequences in-depth. With my limited life experience, I believe at times involvement in war is justified if the suffering caused by a lack of intervention outweighs the potential casualties of involvement. For example, if two ethnic/political factions exist in a nation and one seizes power and begins to curtail the rights of the other or moves towards genocide, it is a responsibility for another more powerful nation to use force to overthrow the offending faction. In this case it’s only the less of two evils, because with war always come collateral damage in the form of civilian casualty, or economic stunting.

Diplomacy and negotiation are always preferable to conflict. A peaceful solution is every diplomat’s goal, but in the real world, lack of cooperation or communication between leaders could spell futility of peace talks.
