Assignment 10 - Dani Fauzi

I hate their soulless, beady little eyes. As a high school student I feel particularly targeted by these ubiquitous, sidewalk-roving rodents. I recall a recent afternoon walk I engaged in in which I spotted several squirrels. I always feel like they’re watching me. Always they pause on the curb strip just as you walk by. And they stand there, mocking us. “Yeah, I’m gathering these acorns and adhering to the bare minimum of actions necessary for the survival of my wretched species while you have to get back home at 5:30 and finish homework and wake up at 6 the next morning to go to school.” Soon they scurry up to the safety of a high tree branch. I think about getting into bed.

The student must rush back home to avoid a verbal scolding for being out after sunset, after which they must continue their participation in the human rat-race of society. The squirrel, primitive and simple, only taunts.
