Assignment 23 Danielle Dutton

I can never seem to be productive while listening to music. I get too wrapped up in singing/listening to the music that whatever task I was supposed to be completing I soon forget. And since I have so much to get done all the time, the only time I can really get away with listening to music is when I’m driving. That being said, since driving is my one free time to be absorbed in (or fairly absorbed in - I still have to drive safely) music, I always choose to listen to my favorite genre of music - musicals. So here’s a driving playlist of some of my favorite show tunes from movies and broadway alike:

  1. Prologue: Into the Woods - The cast of Into the Woods (This one is upbeat and the interwoven storylines and vocal interjections are a lot like traffic so I always feel hyper aware during this song. I especially love the witch’s part a little ways in that gets more intense. Whenever I get all of those words right with Meryl Streep’s attitude I feel unstoppable.)
  2. Mother Knows Best - Donna Murphy (Tangled) (This one continues the feeling of being unstoppable because of the sass in the song.)
  3. The Schuyler Sisters - The cast of Hamilton (Again, attitude and feeling unstoppable.)
  4. You’re Welcome - Dwayne Johnson (Moana) (This one is just fun. I struggle with the rap sometimes but when I get it I (say it with me) feel unstoppable.)
  5. Practically Perfect - The cast of Mary Poppins (If I were to choose a broadway dream roll it would be Mary Poppins (or Eponine from Les Mis). That being said, this song is the most Mary Poppins thing in existence, and who doesn’t like to take on a British accent and think for three minutes that they’re practically perfect?)
  6. Anybody Have a Map? - Rachel Bay Jones and Jennifer Laura Thompson (Dear Evan Hansen) (This song is an expression of how I sometimes feel while driving. I’m extremely directionally challenged. It’s also quick paced and features some brief but cool harmonies between two great actresses/singers.)
  7. Master of the House - The cast of Les Misérables (Honestly I think the most fun thing about this song is the accent. So it’s on this list because driving is one of the few times I’m alone and can sing in such a ridiculous voice and nobody will question me.)
  8. Dig a Little Deeper - Jenifer Lewis (Princess and the Frog) (This song is just a blast. I love the jazz style, and the vocals are great, and Mama Odie is who I want to be in 80 years.)
