Assignment 23 - Dani Fauzi

The perfect playlist for early august/late summer break -- it’s beautiful outside but the prospect of a return to school and a changing of the seasons looms unsettlingly over you

  1. Every Shining Time You Arrive - Sunny Day Real Estate
    1. To start, a song that’s equal parts optimistic and melancholy. It’s not incredibly upbeat, and sets a precedent for the rest of the playlist--a mixed bag of enjoyment of summer and anxiety about the future.
  2. Sister - Angel Olsen
    1. As the longest song on this playlist, nearing 8 minutes, I’d categorize this track as a ballad. Straight from MY WOMAN, Olsen’s critically acclaimed album exploring her relation to her gender, “Sister” is ideal for long bike rides or car drives home while worrying about the future.
  3. Fireworks - Mitski
    1. This is more of a chill song to follow up the emotional wreck that I usually am after listening to the previous track. Another two-sided song.
  4. Everybody Wants to Love You - Japanese Breakfast
    1. An ubpeat banger to counter the mellowness of Mitski, this song is great to sing or scream along to in order to get your frustrations out.
  5. Moon over marin - dead kennedys
    1. The Dead Kennedys punktuate (HAAAHAAA) this playlist with cynicism but a positive final reminder that there will always be a brighter future. The two-sidedness of this song represents the general emotional two-sidedness of late summer.
  6. Humanity arranged - screaming females
    1. Another punk-ish track, still upbeat and cynical.
  7. Tongue Tied - grouplove
    1. This song encapsulates the rush of the end of summer as we all struggle to fit in as many activities we can into the remainder of our break. It’s an upbeat pop song that serves as a climax, mood-wise, of this playlist before descending into more contemplative music.
  8. In Undertow - Alvvays
    1. I feel like this song really characterizes the unsettling feeling that’s a hallmark, for me at least, of the end of summer break. “We tossed and turned in undertow,” echoes the frustrations of coming of age.
  9. Grown/Waiting for Cars - Soccer Mommy
    1. I love Soccer Mommy with all my heart; seeing her live at the Burl was a highlight of the past semester. Her entire body of work strikes a chord with the restless spirit of youth and puts a voice to the uncertainties of growing into adulthood. I couldn’t decide between “grown” and “waiting for cars” so this playlist is technically 11 songs.
  10. Harvey - Alex G
    1. To finish I’ve place the terse “Harvey” at the end because it sums up the disillusionment with school and “success” I feel and also dwells a little on a regression into childhood that seems attractive as the responsibilities of aging loom.
